Wednesday night took the Bothell team down the 405 corridor to Newport HS in south Bellevue. Although not trailing in the first half, it took the Cougar girls a full two quarters to get on board the “Blue Train” and start moving well as a team on both ends of the floor. Newport has a scrappy young team (mostly Sophomores and Juniors) with a point guard whose crossover leaves defenders behind with broken ankles and forwards, who, despite their lack of height, crash the offensive boards with intensity.
After scoring the first few buckets, Bothell was up only one at the end of the first quarter 11-10, and still up only one at 24-23 at halftime. In the second quarter K. Jones started to take over the offensive scoring and had 13 points at half. Just before half Jones picked up her third foul.
Out of the half – Bothell picked up their intensity on both ends of the floor. Jones moved to high-post and started working the lanes with her great step-through moves. Hudson caught fire hitting 3 straight shots including a 3 from the left wing. The defense tightened up – led by Dixon off the bench with pressure on their point guard – holding Newport to only 9 points in the quarter. By the end of the 3rd quarter it was Bothell 42-32.
Through the 4th quarter the Bothell “Blue Train” offense started to roll – Jones, Hudson & Corosdale hitting from all areas of the floor & getting multiple put-back shots. Corosdale picked up a bunch of her points from the charity stripe as she was getting fouled on her low block moves. Defense held Newport to 8 points while Bothell scored 18. Final score was 60-40. Jones ended with 20 points, Hudson 15 & Corosdale 13 – at least the 3rd game where we’ve had three players in double figures.
With the win Bothell moves to 6-0, matching the Bothell Boys basketball team 6-0 start.
It’s good to be a Bothell Cougar!
