When You Have to Finish Perfect

Some nights are easy and you own the lead for 32 minutes, mark up a ‘W’, and go home.

And then there are those rival nights where you make a few late mistakes and end up down 5  to Inglemoor with 29 seconds left, when you look up at your fans and everyone looks a bit anxious.

These are the nights you grab your teammates hand and tell them “we’re never out of the fight“. These are the nights you remember what it took to get here: the hours in the gym, the hours in the off-season playing AAU, the hours staying late or coming early to shoot a few extra free throws. Remember – this is your story, your dream – you write the ending.

Friday was a night like the later – one where after being up 5 going into the 4th quarter, Bothell found themselves down 5 with 29 seconds left in the game. Many teams would have hung their heads and said “it’s over, let’s go home” – but not this team, not these girls – they showed that they ‘believe that they can win’ – and it showed.

It all started as one of those nights where nothing came easy for Bothell. Down by one 12-13 after the first quarter, Bothell was able to turn the momentum and lead by 3 at half 22-19 and 5 after 3Q 36-31 in a low scoring, defensive struggle.

With 4:42 left in the 4th Bothell was still up one – 38-37, but had only scored two points so far in the quarter and was struggling at both ends of the floor. With 1:15 left, Inglemoor got an offensive rebound, reversed the ball to the corner and Lucy Young buried the 3 putting the Vikings up 46-44. Bothell brought the ball up, had their baseline shot blocked out of bounds and then badly missed a 3 off the in-bounds pass.  Inglemoor brought the ball back up the court and with 34.4 seconds left Hannah Shimek hit a 3 from the right wing putting Inglemoor up 49-44. The Bothell fans let out a collective groan.

Down 5 – 30 seconds left

Bothell called a timeout to regroup and plan how they would respond. This season they’d been behind in the final minutes before and recovered – but nothing like this.

It was a quick hit as the ball rolled nearly to halfcourt before it was picked up, starting the clock. After the made layup it was an instant foul on the in-bounds pass. Inglemoor’s Young hit both FT and put Inglemoor back up 5, 46-51 :28.4 left.

If it worked once – why not do it again?

And they did!  After the Jones layup, Bothell called a time out to discuss the press.  With all players covered the ball was inbounded and bounced of a diving Jada Romulus giving the Vikings another inbounds.  This time on the inbounds pass the ball deflected off the Vikings and it was Bothell ball, their end of the court… down 3… 19.9 seconds left.

The inbounds pass went directly to Corosdale on the left wing, and on a quick step-back, she put up the 3 and was fouled on the shot.

Pressure? What pressure!  To the line for 3 free throws with 17.1 seconds left.

SWISH, SWISH, SWISH

With the full-court press still on, Inglemoor’s Shimek was fouled as she dribbled through a double-team. To the line she went for two free throws with the opportunity to give the lead back to Inglemoor. Rimmed out! Short! The Bothell fans cheered.

Jones with the rebound and she dribbles it up avoiding defenders, 7.7 seconds left and she attacks the basket and is fouled.  To the line, all tied up, 7.7 seconds left, game in your hands.

SWISH, SWISH

Inglemoor inbounded the ball and passed it into their frontcourt, but Bothell deflected the pass and both teams ended diving on the floor for the loose ball as time expired.

Bothell Win 53-51

What a thriller, what a game, what a finish. This is one of those rivalry games and comebacks that will be talked about for years.
